Facebook has recently said in a conference that their advanced artificial intelligent software built using facial recognition technology will notify people when anyone uploads a photo of them, provided, the user allows the company to keep their facial templates in the database. Well, many of us have suffered from the problem of fake id’s, many girl’s privacy is hurt as people copy their profile pictures to increase their friends or talk with people in a fake manner.
But, in order to solve this problem, Facebook has passed a statement this Tuesday, “We’re doing this to prevent people from impersonating others on Facebook.” Their advanced systems will alert you if anyone uploads a profile picture that includes your face. Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, director of Facebook’s applied machine learning posted in a blog that we are going to roll out features, “in order to help people better manage their identity on Facebook using facial recognition.” Moreover, In India, the company has tested a feature to fight the issue by blocking users from downloading profile pictures to pretend they are someone else.
It is really amazing to consider the fact that their database is all set to contain, facial templates of around 2 billion users which approximately 30% of the current world’s population. Due to stringent rules and regulations in countries like Canada, European Union, Facebook is not implementing this feature their immediately.
Well, this step will probably catch collection agencies, telemarketers, honest to goodness real-life stalkers, who take advantage by impersonating another being. But on the other hand, this move can also be used to morally harass or bully people. For example, if a harasser uploads a photo of a person either photoshopped or original, users will be notified without being directly in contact with the person. Facebook has made it open to people’s choice whether to use or not use this feature.
