Mumbai fire: 14 killed, 21 injured as fire breaks out at Kamala Mills Compound


Mumbai: A total of 14 people have died in a huge fire that broke out last night in Kamala Mills compound, a posh locality in Mumbai housing upscale restaurants and pubs. Among the dead, 11 were females.

The fire broke out at around 12:00 – 12:30 am late last night at ‘1 Above’ restaurant and pub on the second floor of Kamala Trade House, Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel, Mumbai. Around 21 others also suffered injuries in the fire. The exact cause of the fire is not known, however, eyewitness accounts state there was a blast sound and soon the entire property was engulfed in flames in half hour. Alerted by the sound, everyone made a fanatic effort to escape. Compounded by the fact there were narrow exit routes, soon the entire scene was covered by a stampede as everyone made an effort to escape. There were around 150 – 200 people in the property last night. The fire also caused damage to Mojos Bristo, a roof top restaurant in the same building and also some properties in the adjoining building. Eyewitnesses and survivors say that there were no clear indicators for the exit routes.

Soon after the news of the incident spread, fire engines and police reached the spot without delay. It took the authorities around 3 to 4 hours to douse the fire completely. The injured were taken to KEM hospital which is in Lower Parel area in Mumbai and to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital located in Sion, Mumbai. The doctors at these hospitals say that most of the deaths were due to suffocation.

Meanwhile, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra visited the site and assured that a thorough investigation into the incident will be conducted and all guilty will be booked.  The owners of ‘1 Above’ restaurant have been booked by the police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
