A 21-year-old woman in Bengaluru died in a tragic accident after the two-wheeler in which she and her sister were riding was struck by a truck while negotiating a pothole. The incident took place in Devnahalli on Tuesday morning when the deceased G Veena, 21, was riding pillion behind her older sister G Lakshmi, 24. According to reports, G Lakshmi slowed down her scooter on encountering a sudden pothole when a truck hit them from behind. Both of them fell from the bike, while G Lakshmi faced severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in hospital, G Veena was run over by the truck and died on the spot.
The truck driver fled immediately from the spot leaving his vehicle and police have registered a FIR against him.
This is the fourth incident that has taken place in Bengaluru while avoiding a pothole. Consistent heavy rain and frequent flooding over the past few months have resulted in the creation of more than 15,000 potholes in the city responsible for claiming lives. Considering these deaths due to accidents caused by potholes, Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah of Karnataka declared an emergency in the capital and demanded fixation of these potholes within the time period of 15 days.
The government of Karnataka is facing sharp criticism from angry residents as well as the opposition party as no steps were taken to solve the battered conditions of the road. The BJP members and angry residents blocked the roads and protested against the deaths due to terrible situation of the roads.
These accidents have raised a question in people’s mind which was recently posted on Quora, whether Bengaluru is “A city of Gardens” or “A city of Potholes.” To this a woman, Umme Salma replied, “It is indeed a city of gardens. But to pay a visit to the gardens you need to cross many potholes.”
